2016 was a relatively underwhelming year at the Indian box office with the exception of a couple releases from Hollywood and Kollywood (Chennai).
In Bollywood the following films were the notable collectors, though a number of these were losers relative to their cost, and no film emerged recordbreaker: Pink, Baaghi, Fan, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Shivaay, Housefull 3, Rustom, Airlift, Dhoni, and Sultan, current Bollywood's top grosser with around Rs 275 crore net collection. A high profile release in Dangal remains pending.
The highest earning film from India was Rajnikanth's Kabali (Tamil dubbed in Hindi, Telugu etc) with worldwide collection exceeding Rs 600 crore gross. This was followed by Theri, Remo, Iru Mugan, and Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada.
At Rs 140 crore gross the top earning telugu film was Janatha Garage. Other notable successed included Nannako Premmatho, Oopri, and Pelli Choopulu.
Among Hollywood releases the topper was Jungle Book which did break records and collected nearly Rs. 200 crores gross in India relative to a total of Rs 6000 crores worldwide. Other films that collected big were Captain America, The Conjuring 2, X-Men: Apocalypse. 2016 followed in the heels of a record 2015 for American films in India where Furious 7, Jurassic World, and Avengers had each crossed the Rs. 100 crore mark.
