2015 for Bollywood ends with a surprise box office bonanza as Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani starring Ranveer Singh has defeated Shahrukh Khan starrer Dilwale at the box office. Both movies released around Dec 18th and the result has stumped the trade because apart from Khan, the latter release also boasted of Kajol and was seeking to cater to the popularity of the biggest hit of their career, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.
Week 1 occupancies were in the range of 40-50% for Dilwale whereas it was closer to 60% for Bajirao Mastani. Dilwale had slightly better opening weekend in comparision to Bajirao Mastani. However the tide had turned by sunday afternoon, and from the first Monday onwards Bajirao has been beating Dilwale everyday, collecting over 10 crores each day. By the 2nd weekend, BM has already proven to be the eventual winner of this box office clash. Bajirao is looking at passing Rs. 200 crores and given the stability of the collections there may not be stopping the film even there. In the case of Dilwale, the film will be looking towards Rs. 150 crore nett and beyond Bengal circuit, Dilwale will be lagging for the distributors.
The success of Bajirao Mastani is high water achievement for its lead actors (Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra) and has reestablished the box office dominance of Sanjay Leela Bhansali who had hit a mixed patch after giving string of hits in his career with Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), Devdas (2002), Black (2005). However after the hit Ram Leela (2013), Bhansali is now marking off 2015 with a super hit in Bajirao Mastani.
